As local authorities face growing environmental responsibilities, councils are expected to lead the way in delivering meaningful biodiversity outcomes. Understanding legal duties, developing strategic plans, and implementing effective projects can be challenging without the right guidance. To support councils in meeting these obligations, Green Council Solutions is offering a one-day masterclass designed specifically for Clerks, Officers, and Councillors.

This in-person training will take place on 22 April 2026 at The Alverton, Truro, Cornwall, providing a practical, hands-on learning experience that equips delegates to translate policy into action.

Course Overview

The masterclass provides a comprehensive framework for councils to approach biodiversity management strategically and confidently. Delegates will gain insight into legal obligations, project planning, risk management, and community engagement, leaving with a clear pathway to implement measurable outcomes.

Key learning outcomes include:

Understanding Your Legal Duties

Delegates will develop the knowledge to navigate complex statutory requirements, including Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG), Local Nature Recovery Strategies (LNRS), and the biodiversity duty. This ensures councils can act with confidence and remain fully compliant.

Developing a Council Action Plan

The course provides a step-by-step methodology to create a robust and meaningful Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP). Councils will learn how to set achievable objectives, prioritise initiatives, and embed biodiversity considerations across all local authority operations.

Implementing Projects Effectively

Delegates will explore best practice approaches for scoping, funding, and procuring local biodiversity projects. Guidance will focus on delivering practical outcomes that benefit local communities and ecosystems alike.

Managing Risk and Engaging Communities

Participants will gain insights into compliance, risk mitigation, and public engagement, ensuring that biodiversity projects are legally sound and supported by the local community.

Professional Development

This masterclass is certified for 7 CPD points, providing a recognised and valuable contribution to professional development for council officers and councillors. By attending, delegates enhance both their individual expertise and their council’s strategic capability in biodiversity management.
